Floor covering installers install carpet, wood, linoleum, vinyl and other resilient floor coverings in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. They are employed by construction companies, floor-covering contractors, installation companies and carpet retailers, or they may be self employed.

Responsibilities

  • Estimate materials, measure & mark guidelines on surfaces

  • Cut covering & foundation materials according to blueprints & sketches

  • Understand pattern layout

  • Safely use many tools, adhesives & fastening systems

  • Apply shock-absorbing, sound-proofing or decorative coverings

  • Scrape, sand or chip to correct imperfections

  • Strong communication, reading & numeracy skills

  • Problem-solving & planning skills

  • Ability to kneel for extended periods of time

  • Ability to visualize spaces to estimate materials

  • Good colour vision

Apprenticeship Program

6000 hours of on-the-job training, supplemented by two 10-week sessions of in-class technical training.

Entrance Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma preferred (Grade 10 minimum)

Journeyperson Wage Rate

$45.25/Hr (2024 Provincial Average)
